What is Mammography?
Mammography is a specific type of imaging that uses a low-dose x-ray system for breast examination. A mammogram is used to detect early breast cancer in women and to detect and diagnose breast disease.

Preparing for your Mammogram

  • Do not wear deodorant, talcum powder or lotion under your arms or on your breasts the day of your exam
  • Do not wear jewelry, if possible
  • Wear loose fitting clothing above the waist as you will need to change into a gown
How is a Mammogram Performed?
During your mammography, our technologist will position your breast into the mammography unit. Your breast will be placed on a special platform and compressed with a paddle. This compression is necessary to:
  • Even out the breast tissue for better visualization
  • Spread out the tissue so that small abnormalities won’t be obscured by breast tissue
  • Allow the use of a lower x-ray dose
  • Hold the breast still to eliminate blurring of images
  • Increase sharpness of the picture
The technologist will stand behind a glass shield during the x-ray exposure. You may be asked to change positions slightly between images.

The exam will take about half an hour. You will then be asked to wait while the images are viewed to determine if more images are needed.

During your Mammogram
During your mammogram you will feel pressure on the breast as it is squeezed by the compressor. Be sure to inform the technologist if pain occurs as the compression is increased.

Scheduling your Mammogram
If possible, you should schedule your mammogram the week after your menstrual cycle. Some women experience breast tenderness before and during this cycle and scheduling after will reduce that tenderness.

Mammograms are performed by appointment only Monday thru Friday. For your convenience, evening appointments are available. For more information or to schedule a mammogram, please call our Radiology Department at (570) 398-1440.
