What is a CT Scan?
Computed Tomography (CT) scans are painless and combine the power of x-ray technology and computers, which allow physicians the ability to view wafer-thin sections of the human body. The scan provides your physician with detailed images to aid in diagnosis. A CT scan is required when a patient is experiencing any illness or injury that may not be easily detectable from a normal physical exam.

The GE Lightspeed CT Scanner
Jersey Shore Hospital utilizes the GE Lightspeed CT Scanner. The Lightspeed allows physicians the benefits of high quality images and advanced testing abilities. With the Lightspeed, patients will experience shorter breath-holds and less radiation time to the body.

Preparing for a CT Scan
You should only consume liquids during the meal before your scan, unless you are a diabetic. If you are a diabetic, consult with your physician about eating prior to your CT scan.

What Should you Expect?
You should expect the CT scan up to take 30 minutes, depending on the exams your physician recommends. You will be expected to remain very still with as little movement as possible. For some scans, it may be necessary for you to have breath holds. Your CT staff will discuss the testing requirements necessary and a breathing light is available to guide you in your breathing.

Contrast Media
Specific types of CT scans require the use of contrast media. Contrast media is a pharmaceutical agent, given intravenously, to highlight body parts for more detailed testing. Contrast media contains Iodine, please tell your physician and the CT Staff if any of the following apply:

  • If you might be pregnant, or if you are breast-feeding

  • If you have anemia or other diseases that have an effect on red blood cells

  • If you have asthma or other allergic/respiratory disorders

  • Head CT Scans
Please remove all metal object on or around your head. These may include, but are not limited to, the following: jewelry, hairpins, eyeglasses, hearing aids, etc.

    Abdominal CT Scans
It is not necessary to use laxatives prior to your CT Scan.
For some types of scans you will need to drink a flavored liquid either 30 minutes or two hours before the exam. This liquid will outline the stomach and/or intestine to ensure clear images on the x-rays. If you are having this type of exam, you will be given the liquid when you arrive to the Radiology Department. For full body and spine scans, you will need to wear a hospital gown.

    Following your CT Scan
You will be able to resume normal activities immediately following your exam. A detailed report will be forwarded to your physician within 24 hours of the exam. Most health plans are accepted and will be billed by Jersey Shore Hospital.
