What is a Bone Densitometry?

A Bone Densitometry or Bone Density Test views and evaluates bone fractures and other injuries of your body. This is the best way to assess your bone density.

Also called a DEXA Scan (dual energy x-ray absoptiometry), this test is a fast, painless, non-invasive, low dose x-ray procedure used to measure the calcium content of your bone, also known as bone mineral density (BMD). DEXA is used to diagnose osteoporosis, a gradual loss of calcium, which causes your bones to become thinner and more likely to break. The results of DEXA help your physician assess your fracture risk.

The GE Lunar Prodigy
Jersey Shore Hospital utilizes the GE Lunar Prodigy Fan Beam Densitometer. Prodigy uses direct-digital detector technology to deliver rapid scans, near radiographic imaging, and radiation doses 3-5 times better than other fan-beam systems. The unique encore software brings high speed and automation to densitometry for faster scan times and consistent results.

Preparing for your DEXA Scan
There are no special preparations for a DEXA Scan. However, you will want to keep in mind the following items before coming for your test:

  • Do not take your calcium supplements for 24 hours prior to your appointment
  • Inform your physician if you have had a barium procedure or have been given an injection for a CT Scan or Radioisotope Scan
  • Wear loose fitting, comfortable and elastic waist clothing
  • Women may choose to wear a sports bra as regular bras with metal wires or hooks will need to be removed
  • Avoid clothing with zippers, snaps, grommets, metal buttons and belts
  • You may eat and drink normally
What Should I Expect?
You will be asked to remove all clothing with metallic objects (zippers, snaps, etc.) that would obstruct the scan path, we will provide you with a hospital gown if necessary. Next you will be weighed and measured. The lumbar region (lower back) and both hips are scanned most routinely. Your forearm may need to be scanned if you have any of the following:
  • Hip or spine surgery
  • Sever degenerative changes to the hips or spine
  • Unable to lie on your back
  • Spine fractures
  • Hip replacement
  • Severe hip arthritis
  • Wheelchair bound/disabled
  • Weight over 300 pounds
During your test you will lie on a padded exam table. The technician will adjust your position for the area that will be scanned.

For the lumber (lower back) region you will have a sponge under your knees and lower legs to flatten your pelvis and back.

For the hips you will have your feel in a brace, which rotates your hips and knees inward. You may experience mild discomfort at this time.

You will need to remain still for a short period of time. The lumbar region scan takes approximately 30 seconds, while a scan of your hips will take approximately one minute.

What do the results mean?
Your bone mineral density is given in two ways: “young normal” or T-Score and “aged-matched” or Z-Score.

T-Score
The T-Score compares your BMD (bone mineral density) to that of a healthy, young adult of the same sex. This value determines your fracture risk.

Z-Score
The Z-Score compares your BMD to what would be the expected BMD of someone your age and body size.

Your doctor will receive the T-Score results.

According to the World Health Organization, a T-Score at or above a –1 is normal and has a low risk of fracture. A T-Score between –1 and –2.5 is considered Osteopenia with a moderate risk of fracture. A T-Score at or below –2.5 is considered Osteoporosis with a high fracture risk.

Your results will be sent to your physician within a few days. Please do not ask the technologist about your results as they need to be reviewed by the Radiologist first.

Insurance
Medicare and most insurances cover the cost of a DEXA Scan. Usually one scan every two years. Check with your insurance provider before you schedule your scan to ensure coverage.

Scheduling an Appointment
You must have an order from your physician for this test. Jersey Shore Hospital performs DEXA Scans Monday thru Friday by appointment only. For your convenience, evening appointments are available. To schedule an appointment or if you have any questions regarding a DEXA Scan please call our Radiology Department at (570) 398-1440.
