Jersey Shore Hospital Now Offers Technology of Breast MRI

As a complement to digital mammography, Jersey Shore Hospital is proud to announce the availability of breast MRI within our state-of-the-art Radiology Department.

A breast MRI is a non-invasive procedure that uses magnetic resonance imaging to get cross-sectional views of the breast.

MRI of the breast offers important information about different kinds of breast conditions that cannot be found when using other imaging modalities, such as mammography or ultrasound. It is used to provide your doctor more information than the mammogram, ultrasound or clinical breast exam can provide.

There are many different reasons that your doctor may recommend you have a breast MRI.

Some of the reasons include a very strong family history of breast or ovarian cancer, if your doctor finds an inconclusive abnormality on your mammogram, or there is a known spot that cannot be seen on a mammogram.

Also, women with very dense breast tissue and those who have a suspected leak in a breast implant may result in needing a breast MRI.

While Breast MRI does not replace mammography or ultrasound imaging, when recommended it is a valuable supplemental tool, particularly in the dense breast, to detect certain abnormalities. Additionally, it is often used for breast cancer staging.
