Vascular Care Without the Distance: Jersey Shore Hospital to Begin Holding Vascular Clinics

Jersey Shore, PA (October 21, 2008) - Jersey Shore Hospital will begin holding vascular clinics for patients on Nov. 13. This means that area residents who are suffering from Peripheral Vascular Disease (PVD) or an Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm (AAA) will not have to travel out of the area to receive attention.

Jersey Shore Hospital will handle the initial consultations, pre-operative diagnosis and any lab procedures that may need completed. When a patient needs vascular surgery, they will be sent to Evangelical Hospital in Lewisburg to receive treatment. However, post-operative follow-up and any other doctor-patient meetings will take place at Jersey Shore.

"Vascular surgery is very underserved in this area and other areas of the country and part of that is due to convenience. There is an availability and accessibility process with medicine where if something is not available, then it tends to be ignored," said Dr. Todd Stefan, M.D., FACS, who will be the physician in charge of the vascular clinics.

Stefan, who practices at Central Susquehanna Surgical Specialists in Lewisburg and is certified by the American Board of Surgery in surgery and in the subspecialty of vascular surgery, believes that the addition of a vascular clinic to the area is necessary.

"By brining vascular care to the community, we hope to help to identify patients with life-altering or life-threatening conditions in the early stages," said Stefan. "If we intervene, we can help people live normal lives without the debilities of a stroke, for example."

Stefan feels that it is important to allow residents quality health care in their own communities, another reason that a vascular clinic will be beneficial to Jersey Shore Hospital.

"If you make it more convenient for the patients to receive care, you tend to have more compliance and therefore, better care. We provide high quality health care with accurate results. The operation, if necessary, is the only procedure that would have to take place elsewhere," said Stefan, who works in state-of-the-art vascular lab that offers traditional surgery or minimally invasive surgery.

Stefan will also be working in tandem with patients' primary care physicians, enlivening the close-knit community health care ideal.

These clinics will be held once per month to begin, with the possibility of more as the need arises.
