Jersey Shore Hospital Radiology Earns Mammography Accreditation
from American College of Radiology
JERSEY SHORE, March 14, 2001
The Imaging Mammography program at Jersey Shore Hospital earned a three-year accreditation following a recent survey conducted by the American College of Radiology, announced Ed Sowul, the Hospital's Technical Director of Radiology Services.
With the accreditation, the hospital's mammographic service is certified by the federal Food and Drug Administration. This certification is required under the Mammography Quality Standards Act (MQSA) enacted into federal law in 1992.
To remain in operation, every mammographic service must be accredited under the MQSA. The accreditation survey is conducted by radiologists, who are members of the American College of Radiology, and experts in the field of mammography. In their assessment, they evaluate the quality of service being performed and the qualifications of the personnel providing the service.
"This includes quality standards for physicians, technologists and physicists; assessment of the hospital's ongoing quality assurance program; medical audits and outcome analysis; medical record documentation; and reporting requirements. Re-certification is conducted every three years," explained Sowul.
Hospital Chief Executive Officer, Lou Ditzel, commented, "The MQSA certification is another example of Jersey Shore Hospital's commitment to provide the community with the highest standard of care. We are especially proud of the technical staff, which has worked hard to achieve and maintain this standard. It includes Holly Thompson, RT(M); Nina Cheetham, RT(M); Carol Muthler, RT(M); and Melissa Taylor, RT(M)."
The American College of Radiology is a national organization that serves more than 38,000 radiologists, radiation oncologists and medical physicists, with programs focusing on the practice of radiology in the delivery of comprehensive health services.
