Report Demonstrates Impact of Jersey Shore Hospital (JSH) on Jobs and Community
Harrisburg, PA (October 15, 2004) - According to a report recently released by The Hospital & Health system Association of Pennsylvania (HAP), Jersey Shore Hospital annually contributes more than $41 million to the region's economy. This number represents over $24 million in spending and almost $17 million in ripple effect on the local economy. JSH also supports more than 280 jobs in Lycoming and Clinton Counties. Beyond Health Care - Pennsylvania Hospitals: Key Assets to the State's Economy shows the positive effects Pennsylvania hospitals have on their communities and the regional economy. This report updates a 2003 HAP study and presents new data from HAP and other valuable sources.
Jersey Shore Hospital, positioned on the border of Lycoming and Clinton County, is a cornerstone of the community, ensuring access to vital healthcare and physicians and equally important-serving as a critical, economic catalyst. The Hospital provides for a constant and stable source of well-paying jobs and through purchases of goods and services, provides support for local businesses in other fields. Through these economic forces, the Hospital is a significant contributor to the tax base at both the state and local levels.
"We often fail to consider the valuable impact of our hospitals on commerce and the overall economy and it is critical for our policymakers at all levels of government and industry to take note", said Lou Ditzel, President and CEO of JSH. "Today, hospitals like Jersey Shore not only ensure access to quality healthcare for all citizens but they are often the region's most influential employer and economic force, creating opportunities for families to grow and for other businesses to emerge and flourish. When policymakers consider programs that effect our hospital, then by extension they are impacting on the region and its economy." Ditzel noted as an example that the failure of our State leaders to reform medical liability has led to the loss of physicians from our region and large increases in the hospital's operating costs. This in turn has hurt the local economy and access to care.
The HAP report was based on data from the US Department of Commerce, US Department of Health & Human Services and the Pennsylvania Department of Labor & Industry. Jersey Shore Hospital is a constant in technological advances and updates, staff training and providing superior healthcare to the region's most vulnerable citizens.
