Jersey Shore Hospital Wins Achievement Award

Jersey Shore (February 24, 2004) - The Hospital & Healthsystem Association of Pennsylvania (HAP) announced last week that Jersey Shore Hospital won the 2004 Achievement Award for Community Stewardship for their Colon and Rectal Cancer Screening and Education program. Jersey Shore Hospital was one of 108 entries received for nomination for the annual award focused on sharing "best practices" in various health related fields.

Entries for the award were judged on how each individual nominated program improves patient satisfaction and quality of care, and how they produce cost savings as well as innovation and adaptability to their community. A panel of judges comprised of representatives from the Pennsylvania health care community rated each project on a scale of 100 total points.

Jersey Shore Hospital's award winning Colon and Rectal Cancer Screening and Education program began in August 2003. The objective of the program is to increase awareness regarding colorectal cancer and to encourage community members to live a healthy lifestyle and take any necessary steps to diagnose and treat the disease. Colorectal cancer is the second most prominent invasive cancer in females and the third most prominent invasive cancer in males. The program offers free home stool blood kits to individual's age 50 and older for early detection of the cancer. Education is also provided on ways to prevent the development of the disease.
