Jersey Shore Hospital Announces First Loan Forgiveness Recipient

Jersey Shore (August 1, 2002) - Jersey Shore Hospital has selected Shelly Summers as it's first Loan Forgiveness Program Recipient for the upcoming Penn College semester. Shelly is currently a student at Pennsylvania College of Technology enrolled in the Registered Nursing Program. "I have always wanted to be a nurse, I can't imagine myself doing anything different," says Summers. Shelly has been an outstanding employee of Jersey Shore Hospital for almost five years while pursuing her dream of becoming a Registered Nurse. "Shelly was chosen because of her demonstrated love for nursing. Her commitment to Jersey Shore Hospital makes her an excellent choice for our first recipient," says Betsy Crossley, Vice President of Nursing Services. "Our patients will be rewarded in many ways with her new skills and her contagious smile. We are proud to support Shelly as she completes her education." Shelly will begin her remaining two semesters at Penn College in mid-August. Once she has completed her education, she will become a Med Surge Nurse for Jersey Shore Hospital. Summers says that because she is already an employee of the hospital she is confident in the wide range of experienced staff whom she will be able to learn from on a daily basis. Barbara Kozlowski, Director of Ambulatory Care Services, nominated Summers as a Loan Forgiveness Recipient. "Shelly is very loyal and conscientious", says Kozlowski. "She displays a great deal of professionalism and projects a very energetic and uplifting attitude. We would be pleased and proud to have Shelly as a part of our nursing team." The Loan Forgiveness Program was announced earlier this year by both Jersey Shore Hospital and Pennsylvania College of Technology. Created to support nursing students at the college in pursuing their dream, the grant will provide up to $10,000 in loan forgiveness for a student enrolled in the College's nursing majors (registered nurse or licensed practical nurse). To be eligible for the program, a student must possess a minimum grade-point average, completion of most general pre-nursing course work, writing skills, a personal interview and two letters of recommendation from professionals aware of the students capabilities. For more information on the Loan Forgiveness Program or to apply, contact Joan Watson, Director of Human Resources at Jersey Shore Hospital, at (570) 398-3105.
