Jersey Shore Hospital Sponsors Diabetic Symposium
JERSEY SHORE, Tuesday, Nov. 13, 2001 - In recognition of
American Diabetes Month, Jersey Shore Hospital sponsored a free Diabetic
Symposium to the public on Tuesday, Nov. 13. The program was conducted in the
Hospital boardroom.
The symposium offered three different presentations
concerning the disease. William Shlorff D.P.M. presented information on foot
complications caused by diabetes. Dr. Pravin Chapla gave a general overview of
the disease and Danette McPherson, a licensed dietician for the Hospital,
provided a seminar regarding holiday cooking and foods for diabetics.
Each November, the American Diabetes Association (ADA)
sponsors American Diabetes Month. The purpose of this recognition is to
increase awareness of measures that will prevent serious complications of
diabetes. This year the focus of American Diabetes Month includes annual
dilated-eye exams, routine foot exams, and blood glucose and blood pressure
control.
According to the ADA, diabetes was the seventh leading cause
of death in the United States last year accounting for the deaths of some
200,000 Americans.
The ADA estimates that 15.7 million Americans are suffering
from diabetes; however, only 10.3 million have been diagnosed leaving
approximately 5.4 million people unaware that they have the disease.
